Map Literary publishes poems, prose poems, short stories, self-contained novel excerpts, essays of nonfiction or creative nonfiction, hypertext, digital and new media works, author interviews, book/cultural reviews, and art/photography. Submissions are considered year-round, but do not send more work if we are still considering your previous submission. We do not consider work that has appeared elsewhere, either in print or on the web, except by special agreement. We do accept simultaneous submissions but ask that you give us three weeks exclusive consideration if possible; also, please notify us as soon as you can if your work is accepted elsewhere.

By submitting your work, you affirm that you are the sole author and that you maintain all rights for your work. You also affirm that this work has not been previously published elsewhere online, in print, or in any other medium. Upon acceptance, Map Literary acquires exclusive First Serial rights (Internet). The work may furthermore be anthologized in print, audio recorded, archived on our official website, or used on our broadsides or other promotional materials. You promise not to publish the Work nor grant others the right to publish the Work until 90 days after the date of first publication of the Map Literary issue that includes the Work. Upon publication in Map Literary, you may republish the Work or grant others permission to republish it on the condition that such republication is accompanied by an acknowledgment that the Work was originally published by Map Literary. {Special exceptions to the above can be made for certain works of visual art associated with exhibitions at the Ben Shahn Gallery.}

Notes on Duotrope categories: our main genre of interest is Literary/General and its subgenres; we are not interested in straightforward (i.e., non-literary) works of Action/Adventure, Erotica, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery/Crime, Romance, Science Fiction, Suspense/ Thriller, or Western. We are open to all styles, especially Absurdist, Experimental, Literary, Minimalist, Realist and Surrealist. Our favorite poetry forms are Experimental, Free Verse, Hybrid Form, Invented Form, and Prose Poetry. We are open to all subjects, especially Books/Literature, Ethnic/Cultural, Memoir, Philosophy, Sex, Technology. We prefer Flash Fiction and Short Stories but also consider Novelettes and Novel Excerpts; we consider Interviews, Reviews, Articles, Essays, and Non-fiction Narratives. We hope in the near future to offer token payments for work appearing in our print supplement (an occasional print edition featuring selected work from our online issues).
